Midsummer Magic: A Practical Guide to Celebrating Litha

We have officially arrived at the peak of the year. Litha—the Summer Solstice—marks the longest day and the shortest night. On the Wheel of the Year, this is our solar climax. Under the brightly burning sun, we can tend to our own fire celebrations with bonfires and barbecues. Gardens are flourishing, and the earth is in full, magnificent bloom. Everything feels vibrant and alive.

In the summer, nothing brings me more joy than tending to my garden, watching the herbs and flowers become bright and vibrant. But I must admit, the midday heat has really started to overwhelm me over the last couple of years. Perhaps I am entering my moon phase of life—moving into a space where my body and spirit prefer the cooler, gentler shadows over the blinding midday glare.

We must all learn to balance light and darkness. This is a fiery season. Fire can purify or destroy. Use the symbolism of fire as a tool for transformation, like the phoenix rising from the ashes. Embody your own radiance, ground your personal power, and gather the strength of the sun to carry you through the coming harvest.

Herbs, Stones & Colors for Litha

  • Herbs: Work with plants that embody the sun or bring soothing medicine to full-summer heat. Calendula (for pure solar radiance), Chamomile (for peace), Lavender (for balance), and cooling Mint (for refreshing the spirit).
  • Crystals: Choose stones that mirror the sun’s fire but keep you grounded.
    • Citrine: For inviting joy and creative abundance.
    • Sunstone: To connect directly with vitalizing, warm energy.
    • Tiger’s Eye: For strength, personal sovereignty, and grounding intense midday heat. Because of how much the heavy summer heat has been getting to me lately, I will be using Tiger’s Eye frequently this season to stay anchored and strong.
  • Color Palette: Vibrant gold, fiery orange, bright sunflower yellow, and the rich, deep green of mature summer leaves. Orange and yellow represent the sacral and solar plexus chakras. How can you bring seasonal colors into your home and/or altar?

Here are some easy seasonal projects and recipes to help you celebrate.

Sun-themed button Wreath

Crafting seasonal wreaths is my latest obsession, and it has become my favorite festive tradition to welcome each new season. For this summer version, I used bright yellow and orange buttons to mirror the sun’s warmth. It’s a wonder what a simple DIY project: just gather a small wreath base, a selection of colorful buttons, a glue gun, glue sticks, scissors, string, and a beautiful ribbon to tie it all together.

Pressed Flower Mandala Sun Catchers

  • Materials needed: A wooden embroidery hoop, clear contact paper, scissors, and a selection of flattened, pressed summer flowers or leaves (such as pansies, calendula, or delicate fern fronds).
  • The Process: Separate your embroidery hoop. Cut two squares of clear contact paper slightly larger than your hoop. Peel the backing off the first square and lay it down sticky-side-up. Carefully arrange your pressed flowers onto the sticky surface, creating an intuitive, circular solar mandala. Once your design is complete, peel the second sheet of contact paper and press it firmly over the flowers to seal them flat between the two sticky layers, smoothing out any air bubbles.
  • The Finishing Touch: Place your sealed floral sheet over the inner ring of your embroidery hoop, push the outer ring down over it, and tighten the screw. Trim away the excess contact paper from the back of the hoop.
  • The Magic: Hang your completed hoop in a sunny window. As the midsummer sun shines through, it illuminates the delicate details of your garden bounty, filling your space with protective, solar energy.

Garden Mint & Golden Sun Tea

Making a large Mason jar of iced tea has absolutely saved me on hot days so far this year. This recipe utilizes dried mint from my garden harvest last year, combining it with classic solar botanicals for a deeply refreshing, cooling ritual blend.

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups purified water
  • 3 tbsp dried Mint (from last year’s garden harvest for a powerful cooling effect)
  • 2 tbsp dried Calendula petals (for solar radiance)
  • 1 tbsp dried Chamomile (for peace and golden light)
  • 1 tsp fresh grated ginger (just a small spark of solar fire)
  • A generous splash of fresh lemon juice
  • Raw honey or maple syrup to sweeten

Directions: Steep the mint, calendula, chamomile, and ginger in hot water for 10–15 minutes in a heat-safe vessel, allowing the blend to take on a beautiful golden hue. Strain the liquid directly into a half-gallon glass Mason jar and let it cool completely. Stir in the fresh lemon juice and sweeten to taste. Fill the rest of the jar with ice or put it in the fridge to chill.

Summer Solstice Roll-on Blend

In a 10ml roller bottle, blend:

  • 4 drops Bergamot (for uplifting joy and optimism)
  • 3 drops Frankincense (for a grounded, spiritual connection)
  • 2 drops Sweet Orange (for pure solar energy)
  • Top with a lightweight carrier oil (like jojoba or fractionated coconut oil).
  • Optional: Drop a tiny chip of Tiger’s Eye or Citrine directly into the bottle to infuse.

How to use it: Roll a bit onto your wrists and solar plexus before stepping outside to watch the sunset, visualizing your connection to the turning wheel.

The Inner Shift: How the Season Transforms Us

Spiritually, Litha is a time of full illumination. Under the bright midday sun, everything is visible. I am feeling incredibly reflective as we enter this midpoint of the year. Looking back at the last six months, there are so many things I have had to reevaluate in my life and my work. I’ve been intentionally trying to strip my ego down a bit, moving away from the world’s loud, busy expectations and leaning into what is truly sustainable.

This summer, my focus is clear: I am staying cool, tending to my plants, and quietly promoting my upcoming book, Beauty Magic, which is officially set to be released on my birthday this fall! It feels beautifully aligned to birth this project into the world just as the earth begins its autumn harvest.
